The Grand Orrery model of the solar system illustrates the relative orbital motion of Earth's moon and accurately represents the relative orbital speeds of the planets. Since these models were developed in the early 18th century, a historical Grand Orrery typically displayed only the "naked eye" planets up to Saturn.
Our model features 28 moons and 9 planets, including Pluto. The Earth-moon system demonstrates the compound motion of the moon’s orbit around the Earth and the Earth's orbit around the Sun.
For every orbit of Pluto, Mercury completes 1028 orbits. Pluto takes nearly four hours to complete an orbit, while Mercury completes one in about four seconds. The Sun, nine planets, and twenty-eight moons are beautifully crafted from semi-precious stone.
The system is a stunning display of moving solid brass gears, all fully visible beneath the orbiting planets.
The Grand Orrery is elegantly housed in a twelve-sided oak barrel casing with exceptional craftsmanship, supported by twelve solid brass feet.
Above the oak barrel, twelve brass pillars uphold an engraved brass calendar/zodiacal ring.
Crowning the Grand Orrery is a detachable solid brass armillary half-sphere, positioned above the calendar ring and encircling the moving planets.
